When It’s Not the VFD: Proving a Mechanical Problem Electrically

Why VFDs Get Blamed First

When a line goes down, the VFD is often the first thing blamed. In reality, the drive is usually reacting to a mechanical or process issue rather than causing it.

Electrical Symptoms of Mechanical Problems

  • High current at low speed
  • Frequent overload trips
  • Inability to reach commanded speed
  • Rising torque demand over time

How to Prove It’s Mechanical

  • Compare no-load vs loaded current
  • Trend torque or current values
  • Inspect bearings, couplings, and driven equipment
  • Disconnect the load when possible

Common Mechanical Culprits

  • Failed or failing bearings
  • Product buildup or jams
  • Misalignment
  • Gearbox issues

Final Thought

If electrical data points consistently toward rising load, believe it. The drive is reporting what it sees.
